Application tools are accessories that assist in preparing, applying, and finishing heat transfers, vinyl, and sublimation designs. They include squeegees, weeding tools, application tape, alignment rulers, and heat guns for precise and professional results.

A weeding tool is a precision instrument used to remove excess vinyl from a design after cutting with a vinyl cutter. The fine tip allows you to cleanly lift and peel away unwanted material without disturbing the design itself.

A firm felt-edge or rubber squeegee is recommended for applying transfer tape to vinyl and for smoothing vinyl onto surfaces. Felt-edge squeegees are less likely to scratch delicate substrates, while rubber squeegees provide firmer pressure for large flat surfaces.

Application tape (also called transfer tape) is used primarily for cut vinyl and adhesive applications, not typically for heat transfer vinyl (HTV). HTV is applied directly with a heat press using its carrier sheet. Application tape is more commonly used in sign making and cold peel vinyl applications.

A heat gun can be used to pre-shrink garments before pressing, remove wrinkles, or assist in peeling transfer carriers from certain types of heat transfers. It is also useful for activating adhesives or releasing air bubbles in applied vinyl.

Alignment rulers, T-square guides, and laser alignment tools help you position transfers consistently and symmetrically on garments. Consistent placement is critical for professional results, especially in production environments processing multiple items.

To work with HTV, you'll need a vinyl cutter, weeding tools, a heat press, and optionally a pressing pillow for thicker garments. A lint roller and heat-resistant tape are also useful accessories for a clean, professional workflow.

Heat-resistant tape is a commonly used sublimation application tool for securing transfer paper to substrates. Alignment tools also help with positioning sublimation transfers accurately before pressing. Other application tools like squeegees are less commonly used in sublimation workflows.

Keep weeding tools clean and sharp by storing them in a protective case. Wipe squeegees clean after each use and inspect them for nicks or damage that could scratch surfaces. Store all tools in a dry environment away from excessive heat.
