A pen press is a specialized heat press designed to apply sublimation transfers or heat-applied designs onto cylindrical objects like pens, pencils, and similar narrow items. It uses curved or tubular heating elements to wrap evenly around the pen surface.
Pen presses work with sublimation-coated pens, pencils, and similar cylindrical items. The substrate must be coated with a sublimation-receptive surface or polyester coating for the dye to properly bond during the transfer process.
Sublimation ink is printed onto transfer paper, then the paper is wrapped tightly around the pen using heat-resistant tape. The pen press applies heat and pressure, causing the ink to turn into gas and permanently bond with the polymer coating on the pen surface.
Typical settings for sublimating pens are around 375–400°F (190–204°C) for 60–90 seconds, depending on the pen coating and diameter. Always test a sample pen first to fine-tune settings for your specific product.
Many pen press models include multiple slots or a drum-style design that allows you to press several pens simultaneously, improving production efficiency. Check the capacity of your specific model to maximize output.
Use sublimation transfer paper specifically designed for cylindrical objects. The paper should be flexible enough to wrap tightly around the pen without wrinkling, which can cause uneven or blurry transfers.
Design your artwork to match the printable area of the pen, typically a rectangle that wraps around the circumference. Print the design mirrored on sublimation paper using sublimation ink, then cut it to size before wrapping around the pen.
Depending on the press model, you may be able to press other narrow cylindrical objects like markers or styluses. Always verify that the item fits within the press specifications and has the appropriate sublimation coating.
After each session, allow the press to cool completely before cleaning. Wipe the heating elements with a dry cloth to remove any ink residue or paper fragments. Inspect the heating tubes regularly to ensure even heat distribution.
