What are Sublimation Blanks?

Sublimation Blanks are typically made from materials such as polyester, ceramic, or metal, which have been treated with a special coating that allows the ink to be transferred onto the surface.

How Sublimation Blanks work?

Sublimation blanks are specially coated items that can be printed on using the sublimation printing process. Here's how they work:

Design Creation

A design is created using graphic design software. This design is then printed onto a special sublimation transfer paper using sublimation ink.

Heat Transfer Process

The printed transfer paper is placed on the sublimation blank, and the two are subjected to high heat and pressure using a heat press. The temperature typically ranges between 350-400°F (175-205°C).

Sublimation Ink Activation

When heated, the sublimation ink turns into a gas without passing through a liquid state (a process called sublimation). The gas then penetrates the polymer coating of the sublimation blank.

Permanent Bonding

As the blank cools down, the gas turns back into a solid, becoming a permanent part of the blank's surface. This results in a high-quality, vibrant, and durable image that won't peel or wash away.

Applications

Sublimation blanks can be used for a wide range of products, including t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, photo panels, keychains, and more. The process allows for full-color, photographic-quality images that are highly durable and resistant to fading.

Joto's offers a variety of sublimation blanks along with a range of customizable items to fit your design preferences. Explore our collection today!

Do you need special blanks for sublimation?

This process does require specialized ink, paper, and material or fabric to work. There are a wide variety of sublimation blanks available on the market.

What materials can you not sublimate on?

Natural fabrics like cotton and silk are not well-suited for sublimation printing as the fibers in these materials do not readily bind to the inks used in sublimation. However, with proper treatment, it is possible to achieve higher quality prints on these fabrics.

Can you sublimate onto any surface?

No, sublimation only works on surfaces with 60% or more polyester content or polyester, sublimation coated surfaces. These polyester coated surfaces are often called sublimation blanks and include t-shirts, photo frames, keychains, puzzles, tumblers, ceramic cups and more.
